As a teacher, Anna hopes to empower high-school girls through education. Allison Floyd is a Senior Health Promotion Major. She strives to encourage others to live well- not just healthy. She hopes to work specifically with girls in her future career and share the importance of being both kind and empowered. |
This project was designed for an English 3535 course at Appalachian State University. Coming of Age in American: Girls, Culture, and Literacy examined the forces that shape the lives of American girls through the study of scholarly literature and primary sources. Students enrolled in this course analyzed how adolescent girls have learned and comprised their identities through the consideration of girls' practices. In these practices are the issues of class, gender, race, ethnicity, and sexuality. This course encouraged scholarly discourse, critical thinking, and a foundation in the contemporary theories of American girlhood.

This dictionary, created as a final project, was a collaborative effort to bring together entries relating to aspects of girl culture.
The purpose of the A-Z Dictionary of Girlhood is to provide information and solidarity to girls. It is our hope that readers of the A-Z Dictionary will come away having learned something new, and recognizing their own experiences in our collection of words. While the dictionary does not encompass every aspect of girlhood, effort has been made to identify at least one aspect in the life of every girl. |
