YWCA
The first association in the U.S., Ladies Christian Association, was formed in New York City in 1858. The term YWCA was first used in Boston in 1866. Their mission statement is, "YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all." The organization continues to evolve to meet today's challenges in eliminating racism and empowering women. It has shifted to a bottoms-up, grassroots structure. It launched a revitalized brand that reaffirms the mission of working aggressively for women and people of color. And it engages women 18- to 34-years old to carry on the YWCA mission for years to come.
