Miss America
In 1968, feminists protested the Miss America pageant, partially because its objectification of women and the promotion of solely domestic women. Now, however, the Miss America has made great strives to support the feminist cause. Contestants reflect their roles as women as more than house wives. There is a lesser importance on the swimsuit competition. They are required to discuss a social issue as their platform and their body measurements are no longer announced. The contestants must participate in community service and must have a talent. The girls are also required to be in college and are rewarded scholarship money for simply being in the pageant. However, the contest still contributes to the narrow view our society holds on what women "should" be.
