Walt Disney
While Walt Disney truly innovated movies and television, some of the messages the Disney corporation is sending to girls are not beneficial. Disney’s princesses have long been criticized as sexist, with too much emphasis on looking pretty and marrying a rich man. While Disney has brought in some more independent women (Belle, Aurora), the films continue to struggle to represent strong relationships between female characters. Mothers are usually absent or in the background. Stepmothers are cruel and evil. The leading ladies do not typically have relationships outside of familial and romantic, and if they do, they are usually male. Girls need to be able to see role models with healthy, same-sex relationships and healthy, mother-daughter relationships.
