Body Image
Research shows that TV programs that focus on appearance have begun affecting girls’ self esteem at ages as young as five. Girls are surrounded by media messages of thinness and standards of beauty that are unattainable for the American girl, even for the models themselves. Mothers and other adult role models who speak opening obsess over their weight or make clear preferences towards thinness also affect the way girls see themselves. Negative body image can lead to life threatening measures such as eating disorders. It is important for girls to be able to think about media body standards critically and embrace a healthy approach to their own, unique bodies.
