Kissing Kate
This book effectively addresses the issue of self-discovery and sexual orientation. It does not occur to the main character, Lissa, before the kiss that she might be gay. Through talking, reading, and reflection, she begins the process of self-discovery and really works to understand who she is. The question of her sexuality is not tied up neatly with a bow for the reader. Rather, with the help of a supportive and non-judgemental friend, Lissa ponders her circumstances: she might be bisexual, gay, or maybe just attracted to Kate. Although this question is never answered, Lissa grows to accept and love herself for who she is, even if it is not fully clear to her yet.
